Chiropractic Adjustments: How Do They Work?

Chiropractic Adjustments Vacaville, CA

Chiropractic adjustments are the cornerstone of chiropractic care. Taking a non-invasive approach, they help manage pain and mobility issues related to various musculoskeletal health concerns. At Victory Spine Center, our primary focus is on the Gonstead method, a precise, hands-on technique that uses detailed images and analysis to correct misalignments while preserving joint integrity. Learning more about this and other hands-on techniques can reveal why they are widely used by many chiropractic practices to address issues related to spinal alignment, joint discomfort, and nerve interference.

Types of chiropractic adjustments

There are several techniques used in chiropractic care, each designed to target specific types of dysfunction within the musculoskeletal system. The type of adjustment performed often depends on the patient’s anatomy, health history, and treatment goals. A chiropractor will select the most suitable method based on a thorough evaluation, sometimes using diagnostic imaging to guide care.

The most common technique is the diversified adjustment. This method uses quick, controlled movements to help restore motion in a spinal joint. It is widely recognized for producing the audible popping sound commonly associated with adjustments.

Another method, and our most frequently used one, is the Gonstead technique, which emphasizes precise, hands-on adjustments guided by detailed assessments like digital imaging and X-rays. It corrects partial dislocations and misalignments quickly yet safely. Other options include the Thompson Drop Table Technique and the Activator Method, which utilize specialized treatment tables and handheld instruments, respectively.  Regardless of the exact method, all chiropractic adjustments aim to restore balance and promote optimal nerve function.

How chiropractic adjustments work

At the core of every adjustment is the goal of correcting misalignments (subluxations) that interfere with the nervous system. The spinal cord serves as the main communication pathway between the brain and the body. Misaligned vertebrae can disrupt communication, leading to pain, reduced mobility, muscle tension, and dysfunction in other areas of the body.

Chiropractic adjustments realign the joints and restore motion, allowing for improved biomechanics and better function of the nervous system. When the spine and other joints move as they should, inflammation and pressure on surrounding tissues are reduced. This promotes the body’s natural healing processes and helps prevent future injuries.

Through adjustments, a chiropractor also stimulates receptors in the joints and surrounding muscles, which enhances the body’s awareness of its position in space. This contributes to better balance, coordination, and posture. Athletes, patients recovering from injuries, and those dealing with chronic tension or stiffness most often look forward to this benefit.

When can I expect to feel results?

Muscle strains or minor misalignments may respond quickly to chiropractic care, with noticeable changes after just one or two chiropractic adjustments. Chronic issues, such as long-standing back pain or repetitive strain injuries, may require a series of treatments to achieve lasting results. The chiropractor will personalize a care plan that outlines the frequency and duration of visits based on the patient's goals and response to treatment.
